January - July 2009From there is was off to the National Specialty in It has been so long since I updated this website (which is due for a redesign) that I decided I should just start over. First and foremost, I am spending most of my time, energy and money working on Concered Dog Owners of California (www.cdoca.org). Concerned Dog Owners of California was established to promote responsible dog ownership. Supported entirely by members, the If you love dogs I urge you to join and make a contribution. Because if PETA and HSUS continue to set the agenda, your ability to get a well-socialized and healthy purebred dog in California will be eliminated. So here is what I can remember of the year so far. January, 2009 As always the year started off with the Palm Springs Dog Shows. We had quite a group at the show and were also joined by Deb Pampiks who brought Webster (Ch. Belmont First Class Edition - Am/Can. Ch. Sunbeam's Cruise Control OS SDHF x Sunbeam's Justa Twinkle In Her Eye). Sadly, Webster had a "dead tail", caused by cold, and was not able to complete effectively at the show. At the 2008 Golden Retriever National Specialty Webster made it to the very end. Purina was working on their new ad campaign and selected this photo of Oliver - Sunbeam's High Hopes (Ch. Sunbeam's Double Eagle Chester x Sunbeam's Brie For All) and Vivian - Westwood Above The Rim (Ch. Sunbeam's Rock N Roquefort x Karizma Sunbeam Can't Buy Me Mauve) for one of the ads. Oliver and Vivian were handled by Shawna Brooks and Anders Thorsen in the photos. February 2009Also on Sunday, We missed the most exciting news in February. Ch. Toasty Treasure Island, owned by good friends and co-breeders Pam and Jerry Oxenberg won Best of Breed at Westminster and went on to a Group 2. We always miss the exciting years. Later in the month we went to the San Diego Golden Retriever Specialty. At the Special, under judge Terry Stacy both Oliver (Sunbeam's High Hopes) and his sister Ethel (Sunbeam's High Octane) won very large classes (9-12). Hawthorne - Ch. Sunbeam's Command Performance (Am/Can. Ch. Sunbeam's Cruise Control x Ch. Laurell Sunbeam Pink Panther) was Best Veteran in Sweeps. Following the show, our group had its usual post-show party with Allan Cooper and Tom English, our talented musicians doing themselves proud. Do we go to the dog shows to show dogs or to have a great time with friends - yes! We skipped the Saturday show and on Sunday under juge Edd Biven, Sunbeam's Return on Investment (Ch. Sunbeam's Command Performance x Sunbeam Toasty Five and Dime) was 2nd in Bred By Exhibitor and Reserve Winner's Dog - at 12 months of age. March 2009 This was a quiet month due to legislation. The latest bill, SB250, would essentially require anyone who ever attended a show, an obedience trial, an agility test (where a tag is not worn) or whose dog ever got out one time to spay and neuter all their dogs. There are no exceptions for service dogs, working dogs, etc. And the costs are tremendous. See SB250.org. While we were fighting legislation down in California, in Washington Hobbs - Can. Ch. Sunbeam's Unlimited Potential (Ch. Sunbeam's Command Performance x Sunbeam Toasty Five and Dime) and Mia - Limelite's It All About Me (Ch. Sunbeam Double Eagle Chester x Goldtales Driving In the Limelite) were racking up hunting titles at home. April, 2009 April was a good month for Bond - Ch. Sunbeam's Return on Investment. He earned a 3 point major under breeder-judge Christine Pollander-Calcinnari at the ACDC show in City of Industry. And then the next week-end he got a Best in Sweepstakes under Labrador breeder Barbara Novak at the Western Regional week-end. Pigpen - Ch. Sunbeam's Scene The rest of April was spent making trips to Sacramento to fight SB250. May 2009 This year has been full of serious dog problems and disappointments and in May we lost Tigger. Tigger would have been 15 in August and she was the heart and soul of Sunbeam. We lost Cruiser in August of 2008 and Gainsborough in December of 2008. Losing Tigger was just heart-breaking. While she lives on through her kids, there will never be another group like Cruiser, Gains and Tigger; the mold is broken. Mary Thompson let me show Celine - Calico Power of Love on the Mission Circuit . She was Winner's Bitch in spite of herself under Breeder judge Doug Johnson. June 2009Brubeck, Am/Can. Ch. Sunbeam's Take Five (Ch. Toasty's Baxter x Ch. Sunbeam's Scene Stealer OS A quick trip to Arizona with Bond and Celine. I'd forgotton how much fun it is to go to a show with just a couple dogs. Bond was Reserve Winner's Dog both days and Celine was Winners Bitch under judge Pat Trotter. The rest of the month was spent working on SB250. One of the CDOC fundraisers is an amazing DVD on handling and dogs. You'll enjoy this whether you are a pro or someone starting out; whether you will handle your own dogs or have someone else show them. Bill and Taffe McFadden, Amy Rutherford, Valeries Nunes-Atkinson, Doris Boyd and Marj Brooks all took part. The DVD is $50, the proceeds go to help CDOC and you can order it here. July 2009 The highlight of July are the shows at the Ventura Fairgrounds. We went on Friday adn Saturday. I would have to say that the highlight of the week-end was Cindy Tayak winning the 12-18 class with her dog Marley - Woodland's Lord of the Rings (Ch. Sunbeam's Double Eagle Chester x Woodland's There's Your Trouble). Marley's first show was in January, Cindy has done all the training, trimming, and showing herself. It has not been easy but it was delightful to watch her success. Also winning her class both days was Vivian - Westwood Above the Rim. And making her debut was Woodland's Take A Chance on Me (Ch. Quailwood Sound of Music x Goodtime Saltwater Taffe). She's a doll and will be doing lots of winning. Immediately after those shows it was back to Sacramento for more meetingsand hearings. And then a short vacation. I attended the Canadian Golden Retriever National and the associated Specialty shows. The only dog that went was Sarah - Sunbeam's Love Me Tender (Ch. Sunbeam's Command Performance x Sunbeam Toasty Five and Dime) who traveled with her owners Dave and Debbie Ramsey who made it a vacation with family. Sarah was 3rd in Open on Friday and won Open on Sunday. Also up in Canada was Sarah's brother Hobbs who earned his Canadian WC. What a week-end.Lots of excitement so far. Mia (Ch. Sunbeam's Double Eagle Chester x Goldtale's Driving in the Limelite) has three legs on her JH and Portia earned for final leg so will now be known as SHR Goldtales Drive In The Limelite RA, WC, JH ( |
